A quirky, romantic bothy perched on a hillside on the Isle of Eigg, one of Scotland's Small Isles. This off-grid retreat offers contemporary comfort powered entirely by renewable energy, with spectacular views across to the mountains of Rum.
Sweeney's Bothy is a beautifully crafted single-space hideaway created by The Bothy Project, which also hosts artist residencies here six months of the year. The design embraces slow living - there's no WiFi, just a wood-burning stove with oven, solar-heated water, and a library of maps and local interest books.
The bothy sits 150 metres up a steep path from the road (an electric wheelbarrow helps with luggage), rewarding you with complete seclusion and panoramic views. An outdoor shower and composting toilet with views make even the basics feel special.
The Isle of Eigg itself is remarkable - community-owned since 1997 and running entirely on renewable energy. Week-long stays are encouraged to truly disconnect and embrace the island's slow pace. Explore dramatic cliffs, white sand beaches, and the famous Sgurr of Eigg.
