Cougar Rock Group Campground

Longmire, Washington, US

Camp in the shadow of a 14,411-foot volcano, where ancient forests meet alpine meadows and the 93-mile Wonderland Trail begins.

Nestled at 3,180 feet elevation on Mount Rainier's southwest side, Cougar Rock Group Campground offers an immersive wilderness experience in one of America's most dramatic national parks. The campground sits adjacent to the Nisqually River, surrounded by old-growth forest with glimpses of the iconic 14,411-foot volcano rising above. Five tent-only group sites accommodate larger parties seeking to explore the park together. Just 14 miles from the park entrance, campers have easy access to Paradise—home to wildflower meadows, historic lodging, and trailheads including the legendary 93-mile Wonderland Trail that circumnavigates the mountain. Summer days are pleasantly cool at 60-80°F, perfect for hiking through forests of Douglas fir and western red cedar. Evening ranger programs at the on-site amphitheater bring the park's geology and ecology to life under starlit skies.
